alert it sounds
through tree tops sharp
a bright and brittle bell
it strikes the fur
crowned round his head
saying all there is to tell

a grin that splits
a suture seal
of teeth that flay; to lick
a rush of urgency is born
within it’s chest a tick

with paws that patter
turning stones
in pursuit a point; it’s pounding
skidding wide
into the field
grass—empty; hackles hounding

he brays a howl
towards the sky
into the space that sounded
born of packs
to run alone
a reality that grounded

in circles walked
then haunches rest
a horizon tows the day
sits still the wolf
the law his own
to trek a different way
